Helen Mae Stewart Young of Lewiston died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, from causes related to age.
Helen was born March 24, 1925, at Harvard, Idaho. Her parents were Benjamin Henry Stewart and Cecile Mae Canfield Stewart, farmers in Harvard during the years Helen was growing up. She graduated from Potlatch High School in 1943.
Helen was the sixth child of seven born to the Stewart family. Surviving her are five siblings. She was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Stewart and by their parents.
Helen married her high school sweetheart June 15, 1943, just before he left for naval service during World War II. While her husband was away, she worked at several jobs, including at a logging camp called Camp 36 and at grocery stores both in Potlatch and Harvard.
Helen was a longtime member of the Orchards United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the friends she made at church, as well as the work they did in helping with membership needs. She volunteered for Senior Meals at her church for many years.
Helen and her husband raised four children in the Lewiston Valley. She leaves behind a son and two daughters; a daughter-in-law; and a son-in-law. Her second child, Janette Young Cushman, preceded Helen in death in February of 2009. Helen is the grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Two great-great-grandchildren are expected this spring.
As the children left home, Helen worked at several jobs she enjoyed. She worked at the Potlatch Cafeteria, at Cox's Food Center for 13 years and at Triple A, before retiring to enjoy travel and family.
Helen loved to travel and she saw Canada, Hawaii, New Zealand, Mexico and many parts of the United States. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and doll making. Another great love was the outdoors. She loved hunting, fishing, camping, and rock hunting with her friends, her family and of course her husband. Most remembered by all of her grandchildren are her teaching them to pan for gold and her love of playing cards, a family tradition she grew up with while living on the farm. She taught all of her grandchildren to play cards and played many a rousing game with them.
A memorial will be held in March, after which Helen will be laid to rest in Moscow in her family's burial plot. She will be missed by all of her friends and family, but most of all by her loving sweetheart and husband of 68 years.
