Guy Wicks, Former Idaho Coach, Administrator, Dies In Georgia

MOSCOW -- Guy P. Wicks, 65, a former athletic coach and associate dean of students at the University of Idaho, died Tuesday at Emory University Hospital at Atlanta, Ga.

He had been ill there for a week of leukemia which was complicated by an attack of influenza.

Wicks retired in June, 1966 as associate dean of students at Idaho and had been working since as a field representative of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was visiting the Emory University chapter of Sigma Nu when stricken.

He received his bachelor of science degree in 1925 and his master's degree in 1931, both from the University of Idaho.

Wicks coached football, basketball and baseball for high schools at Genesee, Moscow, and North Central of Spokane before moving to the University of Idaho's southern branch at Pocatello, now Idaho State University.

He stayed at the Pocatello school for 10 years, serving at times as both football coach and athletic director. He coached the football team from 1935 through 1940 and his teams posted a 29-17-1 record.

In 1941 he returned to the University of Idaho and coached both basketball and baseball before joining the Navy in 1943. Wicks was discharged from the Navy in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant.

He returned to Idaho in 1947 and again coached both sports. The next year he became the school's first traveling field agent and visited high schools througout the state. He later became the first secretary-treasurer of the Idaho Vandal Boosters.

Wicks played basketball, football and baseball in college. He also played semipro baseball as a shortstop for the old Lewiston Indians and other teams in the Inland Empire.

Wicks was born June 8, 1902, at Eustis, Neb., the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Wicks. A graudate of Moscow High School, he married the former Grace Jain of Genesee. She survives at the family home at Lexington, Va.

Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wayman (Jain) Gay of Kellogg; a son, Sgt. Donald H. Wicks, formerly of Moscow and stationed in Vietnam; a sister, Mrs. Frank Kennison of Kanehoe, Hawaii; a brother, Pete Wicks of Coeur d'Alene.

Wicks' nephew Mike of Coeur d'Alene was a member of the 1966-67 Idaho Vandal basketball team.

The funeral will be at Short's Funeral Home at Moscow.
