Conrad D. Swan, 70, Deary

Conrad Dean Swan, 70, of Deary, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at his brother's Pullman home from complications of cancer.

Conrad was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Troy, Idaho, to Bennie and Laura Floodberg Swan. He graduated from Deary High School in 1950 and then worked as a log scaler for Potlatch Forests Inc.

Conrad served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1954 during the Korean War.

Conrad attended the University of Idaho and again worked for Potlatch Forests for a time. He married Wilma Wilson June 26, 1957. They would later divorce in 1980. Conrad worked for several years as a caretaker at a retirement center in the Lewiston valley.

In 1959, he went to work at the UI as an electrician and following 38 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1998.

Conrad was a member of the Baker-Lind VFW Post No. 3913. He was instrumental in starting the mobile library in Korea for the U.S. Army as well as in starting the UI credit union, now the Latah Credit Union. He served as electrical inspector for the city of Moscow. Conrad loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and camping.

He is survived by his son, Michael Swan of Seattle; his daughter, Linda Gellings and her husband, Will; a granddaughter, MaryAnne and a grandson, Joseph, all of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Roger and wife Bertha of Pullman; and all of his nieces and nephews. Conrad is also survived by his companion of more than 20 years, Nancy McFadden of Deary.

The memorial service is at 1 :30 p.m. Friday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. The Rev. Gordon Braun, chaplain of Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, will officiate. A private family graveside service will take place at Zion Lutheran Cemetery outside of Deary.

The family suggests donations be made to Whitman County Hospice or the Deary Ambulance Fund.
