Obituary - Walter A. Schroeder

Walter A. (Walt) Schroeder, 89, of Moscow and formerly of Clarkston, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Good Samaritan Moscow Village.

Walter was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Lawrence, Mass., to Walter and Lillian Schroeder. He graduated from high school in Methuen, Mass., and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Walter served as a staff sergeant and flew as a tail gunner in a B-24, flying 30 missions during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1945.

On July 14, 1945, he married in Oakland, Calif. Walter and his wife owned Walt's Mercantile in Parker, Idaho, and operated the local post office in the same building. The couple moved to Las Vegas in 1955, when he took a job as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the position of superintendent engineer in 1977.

Walter and his wife moved to Clarkston in 1984. Walt enjoyed his retirement years meeting and socializing with the people of Clarkston. He enjoyed fishing along the river, planning yard sale routes each Saturday morning, and playing cribbage with his grandchildren. Walt was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarkston.

Walter is survived by his wife of more than 66 years at their home in Moscow; his daughter; his son; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow.

The family suggests that memorials in Walter's name be made to the Good Samaritan Society, Moscow Village, and online condolences can be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.com.
