Obituary - Albert G. O'Connor

Albert George O'Connor, 74

Al passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene. He was 74. Al was born in Toronto, Canada, to John O'Connor and Kathleen Ginley O'Connor May 10, 1937.

His family moved to Alameda, Calif., when he was 12 years old. Al graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Alameda in 1956.

Al served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years and then attended the University of California in Berkeley. He was married and raised a family of four children.

Al spent the majority of his career working in the grocery business. He moved to Boise in 1977 and lived there until retiring in 1995. Al moved first to Moscow and then to Potlatch, where he enjoyed gardening, bicycling and other outdoor activities. Al was an avid runner and ran in several marathons. He never lost his love of learning and took an occasional class at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Al moved recently to Post Falls, Idaho. Unfortunately, Al suffered several strokes in the past few years, which eventually took their toll on his health.

Al is survived by his beloved sisters and brother-in-law; his devoted children; his loving grandchildren; his former wife; numerous loving nieces and nephews, as well as a broad circle of faithful friends.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Terrence O'Connor and Father Edward O'Connor; and his nephew, Timothy O'Connor.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, and burial will be today in the Potlatch Cemetery. A celebration of Al's life will be conducted in the near future for those unable to attend the Mass.

Al's family wishes to thank the staff at the Circle of Life Unit at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene for the care they provided in Al's final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite veterans assistance program or the USO.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel of Moscow, and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
