GENESEE -- Funeral services for Louis Mayer, 75, retired farmer who died Sunday, will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. William Dohman officiating. Burial will be in the Genesee Catholic Cemetery. Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the church.
Mayer, who came to this country from Germany in 1924, died at Gritman Memorial Hospital, where he had been since suffering a heart attack Sept. 8.
He was born Aug. 15, 1900, at Schmidham, Oberbayern, Germany, to Simon and Maria Mayer. His first job in the U.S. was in Colton. He later was a miner at Kellogg, returning to Colton after two years to farm. He moved to the farm north of Genesee in 1945.
Mayer returned to Germany in 1948, where he married Theresa Hofmann on Feb. 4, at Ubersee. He brought his bride to Genesee, where they farmed until retiring in 1965. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
A quiet and unassuming man, Mayer was highly regarded by his neighbors as a thrifty and hard-working farmer.
Survivors include his wife at the farm home, a daughter, Mary Bielenberg, Genesee, a sister Elizabeth Hartwimmer and a half-brother, Lorentz, in Germany, and one granddaughter.
A brother, George, of Colton, and a sister, Marie Carraway of San Diego, Calif. and two half-brothers in Germany died previously.
