GENESEE -- Henry Lorang, 80, died of a heart attack at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Hospital at Spokane where he had been a patient for two weeks.
He had lived at Genesee most of his life.
Lorang was born on Jan. 26, 1888, at Genesee while that town was still part of Nez Perce County. He was the son of John and Mary Lorang.
He was a student at Northwestern Business College at Spokane when World War I began. He enlisted in the Army Dec. 11, 1917, and served in France in 1918 with the 247th Aero Squadron.
He settled on a farm near Genesee after the war. He married Margaret Tobin at Clarkston Nov. 25, 1920. They later separated.
During World War II President Franklin Roosevelt gave Lorang a citation for his efforts in helping the American Red Cross, United Service Organization and scrap metal drives.
Lorang lived at Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1961 and later visited the Holy Land and had an audience with the Pope.
He was a past president of the Genesee Parent-Teacher Ass'n, and the Genesee American Legion Post. He was a member of the Tomer Butte barracks of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Genesee and Moscow, and a member of the Genesee chapter of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include four sons, James Lorang, Poway, Calif., Dr. John L. Lorang, Antioch, Ill., Dan Lorang, Lewiston, and Albert L. Lorang, The Dalles; six daughters, Mrs. Stanley L. (Joan) Sturgill and Mrs. Robert (Maryjean) Sargent, Spokane; Mrs. Clark (Pat) Armstrong, Lapwai; Mrs. Lois Berreman, Auburn, Wash.; Mrs. Thomas (Mary Alice) Jones, Belfort, France, and Mrs. Barker (Rita) Weston, San Antonio, Tex.; three sisters, Mrs. Jack (Christine) Fleming and Mrs. Martha Johnson, Spokane; and Mrs. Ray (Bertha) Kennedy, Moscow; a brother, Charles Lorang, Seattle, and 37 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Genesee. The Rev. Fr. Bartholomew C. McCarthy will officiate.
Burial will be at the Catholic Cemetery at Genesee.
