Kathryn A. (Terhune) Leinweber

Kathryn Amelia (Terhune) Leinweber was born June 8, 1926, in Hackensack, N.J., and died March 16, 2012, surrounded by family at her home in Moscow. She was 85.

Kay graduated from Hackensack Hospital School of Nursing in 1947 and worked as a surgical nurse at Hackensack Hospital before becoming a U.S. Navy nurse for two years. After leaving the service, she attended Syracuse University and graduated with a B.S. Ed (public health nursing) in 1953. She later returned to school during the evening and earned her school nurse teaching credentials in 1971. She married Dec. 17, 1955, in Syracuse. During her 30 years in the Syracuse area she worked as a Public Health Nurse, ran a Well Baby Clinic for the Syracuse Health Department, worked as a school nurse and health teacher, worked as a traveling nurse for insurance companies, volunteered with the Red Cross, volunteered with a telephone crisis counseling center and volunteered with the American Cancer Society. Kay was also a Girl Scout leader for many years; worked as a scout camp nurse; and was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, managing the church nursery and serving on and chairing many committees.

Kay enjoyed a variety of activities including sewing, counted cross-stitch, English bobbin lace-making, cooking, hiking, camping and canoeing. After moving to the Moscow area, she served as a docent for the Latah County Historical Society, volunteered with the Latah Health Department WIC program, served on many committees with the United Methodist Church, volunteered with the UI costumes collection and helped found the Appaloosa Lace Guild.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Kay is survived by her husband of 56 years; two daughters; two sons; sister-in-law; brother-in-law; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Helen (Jones) Terhune; her brother, John Terhune; her brother-in-law, Robert Leinweber; and daughter-in-law Judy (Thibault) Leinweber.

Private burial will be in the Viola Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. March 28 at Moscow First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the music fund at Moscow First United Methodist Church.
