Joseph Knopes Dies At Colfax May 25

Joseph G. Knopes, 72, a lifelong resident of southeastern Washington and north central Idaho, died Sunday at the Whitman Community Hospital in Colfax. He had suffered a heart condition.

Knopes operated a hydraulic repair shop in Colfax after retiring from a lumber mill at Ahashka [sic]. He had also farmed on the Camas Prairie and near Orofino.

He was born June 1, 1902, at Colton and married the former Caroline Heitstuman there October 8, 1932. He was a communicant of the Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, Knopes is survived by six sons, Marlyn, Fullerton, Calif., Harold, Columbia, Mr. [sic], Larry, Clarkston, Allen, Kamiah, Nicholas, Fairbanks, Alaska, and James, Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane; five daughters, Arlene Rodden, Lakenheath AFB, England, Carole Vogel, Colfax, Janice Knopes, Spokane, Delores Wood, Tacoma and Susan Knopes, Colfax; three sisters, Frances Hadley and Christina Broemeling, Clarkston, and Leona Zodrow, Wenatchee; and 17 grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bruning Chapel in Colfax. A requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 Thursday morning at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colfax with the Rev. Victor Brezniker officiating. Burial will be at the Colfax Cemetery. The family has suggested memorials to the heart fund.
