Obituary - Peter N. Johann

Genesee Native Peter N. Johann, Retired Farmer, Succumbs At 74

A retired farmer and native of Genesee, Peter N. Johann, 74, died yesterday at 3 a.m. at Webb Creek, where he had been living with a cousin. Death was attributed to emphysema -- a lung disease from which he had suffered about five years.

After being graduated from high school at Genesee, Johann went to Canada about 1916 and worked as a farmer. He returned to Genesee about 1932 to work on a ranch. During the winters he would go to California because of an asthma condition, returning each summer to the ranch. About a year ago he moved to Webb Creek.

One of nine children of John and Catherine Johann, he was born Dec. 24, 1893, at Genesee. His activities included being a charter member of the American Legion and a member of the Schooler & Bielenburg Club, a veterans group at Genesee. During World War I he played in one of the U.S. Army bands.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Joseph D. McLaughlin, Lewiston; and four brothers, Raymond Johann and Leander Johann, both of Genesee; Benjamin Johann, Moscow; and Theodore Johann, Spokane.

Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home. The funeral will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Fr. B. C. McCarthy of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Genesee, officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Genesee.
