GENESEE -- Leander "Lee" Johann, 73, a retired carpenter and janitor here, died oTuesday in his home of cancer. He had been ill for the past year.
He was born March 29, 1910, at Genesee, to John and Catherine Johann. He graduated from Genesee High School in 1930. He farmed here until 1942 when he served for four years in England and Iceland. He arned the rank of sergeant as an aircraft mechanic.
Johann married Madelen Thompson July 16, 1950, at Lewiston. The lived at Tucson, Ariz. from 1950 to 1953 where he was employed as a civilian aircraft mechanic for the U.S. Air Force.
In 1953, Johann moved back to Genesee to work as a carpenter for Los Esser Construction until he suffered a disabling eye injry in 1965. He then went to work for St. Mary's School and church.
Johann was a member of the American Legion since 1945 and of the Knights of Columbus since 1932. He was a Genesee Fire Department volunteer from 1953 until 1965 and wa sa communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife at the family home in Genesee; three daughters, Kay Weeks of Genesee,
Virginia Leonard of Lewiston and Helen Schwandt of Potlatch.; one son, Eugene Thompson of
Huntington Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Ray Johann of Genesee and Ben Johann of Moscow;
14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Genesee
with the Rev. Edward T. Cope of the church officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Rosay will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Genesee. Vassar-Rawls
Funeral Home at Lewiston is in charge of the arrangemeents.
The family suggests memorials be sent to Genesee Fire Department.

Two survivors were not included in Leander Johann's obituary Wednesday. In addition to his children listed, Johann also cared for two nephews since their infancy. Bruce Nichols of Pensacola, Fla., and Ronald Nichols of Los Angeles, grew up in the Johann household at Genesee.
