Obituary - John Hoduffer

[This appears to be only part of a larger article, however, this was all that was in the obituary book. There is a separate clipping with a picture of Mr. Hoduffer pasted under the following article, with a handwritten date of March 9, 1968; I'm assuming that was the date of the following article, too.]

According to Latah County Deputy Sheriff Edwin L. Pierson, Moscow, Hoduffer apparently stood up in the 10-foot flat-bottomed boat in which he and Estil M. Carbuhn, a Genesee farmer, were fishing and the boat capsized.

Carbuhn's grandson, David, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stout, who was on a raft in the pond, rowed the raft toward the men. Carbuhn helped push the raft toward the spot where Hoduffer was last seen, but he had disappeared.

Pilot Lands

Donald J. Schumacher, Lewiston, who was flying a spray plane over the area, saw the accident, landed near the pond and ran to the nearby Stout residence where he called authorities for assistance.

Nicholas Egland, Genesee, used the Carbuhn boat to search and found Hoduffer's body in about five feet of water.

Carbuhn was reported under medical treatment for shock Sunday night.

The pond, on the Carbuhn farm about four miles east of Genesee, is 14 feet at its deepest spot and covers approximately three acres. It was constructed in November, 1963.

Hoduffer, who was employed as a carpenter by James Springer, Moscow, had been a Genesee resident since 1932 except for the years 1942-1945 when he served in the Army Air Corps at Chico, Calif.

Married at Lewiston

He was married to Emma Roskammer at Lewiston June 11, 1943. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Genesee.

He was born July 24, 1914, at Lumby, Canada, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hoduffer.

Survivors include his widow at the family home; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Dawn) Cartwright, Concrete, Wash.; a brother, Kenneth Hoduffer, Craigmont; a sister, Mrs. Velda Harris, Dallas, Ore.; four half-brothers, Benjamin Cook, Kendrick; Arthur Cook, St. Louis, Mo.; Roy Cook and Herbert Cook, both of California.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Short's Funeral Home, Moscow.
