Marjorie F. Johns Emmons, a painter and poet of Juliaetta, died of liver cancer Tuesday at St. Joseph Regioal Medical Center in Lewiston. She was 62.
She was born to Philip A. and Iva E. Johns at Juliaetta Dec. 6, 1931. She grew up and attended school at Juliaetta until 1948, when the family moved to Phoenix, Ariz. They later moved to Anaheim, Calif.
She graduated from Anaheim High School in 1950 and later that year married Milton Boyd Emmons.
In the late 1950s the family moved to Lewiston, where they lived several years until returning to Juliaetta.
She enjoyed painting, sculpting and writing poetry, and many of her paintings can be found in the homes of local residents.
One of her better-known poems, "The Layoff," was published in 1985, when Potlatch Corp. considered closing the Lewiston lumber mill.
In 1970 she was one of 10 artists selected to display a painting at the Fine Arts Ball at the Lewis-Clark Hotel and in 1974 one of the featured artists at the grand opening of the Conrad House Gallery in Clarkston.
She is survived by three sons, Richard P. Emmons and Robert L. Emmons, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and Roger B. Emmons of Tukwila, Wash.; a daughter, Diane Murr of Spokane; a brother, Richard A. Johns of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Helen Clark of Lewiston; and seven grandchildren. Her husband died previously.
Cremation will take place and a private graveside service for family and friends will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday in Juliaetta.
