Hulda Cecelia Clemenhagen passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at Aspen Park Care Center in Moscow.
Hulda was born May 6, 1910, to Andrew and Berit Aakre Olson on the Olson homestead near Deary. She was the youngest of three children. Hulda attended school in Deary. In the 1920s, she excelled on the high school basketball team. She liked to reminisce about traveling to away basketball games on the train. She was an avid basketball and baseball fan.
She and Grant Clemenhagen were married Oct. 11, 1928. For 63 years, they farmed and raised a family of three children on Big Bear Ridge between Deary and Kendrick. Hulda was proud of her role as fill-in parent to two children when their parents passed away. In 1991, Hulda and Grant moved to Kendrick, where Grant passed away in 1992. Hulda continued to live independently in Kendrick until a month ago.
Hulda was a talented and creative person. She loved working with her hands, cooking, sewing, quilting and doing crafts. In later years, she taught herself to paint and enjoyed painting local scenery on old saw blades. She loved the outdoors, especially picking huckleberries and going on picnics with family and friends. Hulda was actively involved with dinners and functions at the Big Bear Ridge Community Hall. She was a member and a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge in Deary and Home Demonstration Clubs.
Hulda is survived by a daughter; two sons; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Grant; sister Ida Ruby; brother Oscar Olson; and grandson Sheldon Israel.
The family appreciates the kind care Hulda received at Aspen Park and Gritman Medical Center, and also to the many family and friends who visited and helped her in recent years.
The family suggests memorials be made to the J-K Ambulance, Gritman Medical Center Foundation or the charity of one's choice.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Hulda's life is planned for spring.
