Thomas Douglas Baird, M.D., a Moscow physician, died following a long illness Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston. He was 92.
He was born Aug. 11, 1908, in Pittsburg, Pa., to Thomas and LaRoux Baird. His early life was spent in Cleveland where he attended school. He was a graduate of Case-Reserve College in Cleveland and Syracuse University Medical School in New York. He was a licensed physician in New York, Utah and Idaho.
He entered in the U.S. Army as a captain on July 1, 1942, serving in the South Pacific Theater in the medical corps. After his discharge in 1946, he opened a practice in Salina, Utah, and later moved to Moscow, where he had a general practice until his retirement in 1979. Although his patients were all ages, his greatest love in medicine was caring for children.
He married Virginia Gleim in 1932 and she died in 1960.
In 1964, he married Elaine Fleissner. They were divorced in 1993.
His survivors include his former wife, Elaine Baird of Clarkston; a son, Peter Baird of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Gail Mundell of Tacoma; two brothers, John Baird of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and David Baird of Worthington, Ohio; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Kay Vanier.
Cremation has taken place and at his request there will be no funeral. A private graveside service will be held.
It is suggested by the family that any memorials be sent to Idaho Veterans Assistance League in care of the Idaho State Veterans Home, 821 21st. Ave., Lewiston or to a memorial of their choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston.
