W. Russel [sic] Armstrong, 56, a former Lewiston resident and artist died November 24 at a Portand [sic] hospital of cancer. He had been ill for about two years.
Armstrong spent most of his life working in various state and national parks--including Yellowstone, Timberline in Oregon, and the Grand Tetons--in restaurants and stores. He took advantage of the opportunity to paint scenics--many of which were used on post cards. Several of his paintings were sold in the Portland area.
He was born Dec. 15, 1916, at Genesee to Walter and Ella Armstrong. He graduated from Lewiston high school, and Lewiston State Normal School, now Lewis-Clark State College. He attended the U. of Idaho, and Texas A&M, College Station, Texas, before joining the Navy during WWII. He was a radio operator in the South Pacific.
After his discharge, he attended Stanford University, Stanford, Calif. and later taught school at Pierce. He had lived in Portand [sic] for several years.
Survivors include three sisters, Lucile Mullen, Lewiston; Mildred Hickman, Palouse, Wash., and Beatrice Sumner, Medford, Oregon.
A memorial graveside service was held Monday at one o'clock at the Genesee City Cemetery with Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Following cremation, memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 3 at 1:00 p.m. in the Genesee City cemetery for W. Russell Armstrong, who died Nov. 22 in Portland of emphysema.
The Rev. Dave Roberts of the Palouse Federated church officiated, with military rites by Bielenberg-Schooler American Legion Post.
