Helen L. Anderson of Troy died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, surrounded by her family. She was 87. Helen was born June 10, 1924, at Nezperce to George and Kathryn Schlader.
She grew up and attended school at Orofino, graduating from high school there. Helen then attended the University of Idaho at Moscow, graduating with a degree in education.
Helen began her career teaching at Potlatch, where she met Dorwin B. Anderson. They were married in Orofino May 12, 1951. They made their Last Page in Moscow until 1957, when they built their Last Page in Troy.
In 1964, she returned to teaching in Deary and retired from the Troy School District in 1988. Through the years she taught Last Page economics, health science and U.S. government classes.
She was member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow and the Idaho Education Association, of which she served as president.
Helen enjoyed camping and fishing, sewing, boating, quilting, was an avid reader and bridge player, and will be remembered especially for her cooking. Helen was co-grand marshal of the Troy Day parade in 2008.
Surviving are two sons of Moscow and of Cottonwood; two daughters of McCall and of Everett, Wash.; four grandchildren; and a sister of Orofino.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband in March 2008; a brother, Raymond Schlader; and a sister, Irma Egland.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow, with burial to follow at the Moscow Cemetery. A reception and luncheon will be at St. Mary's Family Center following the graveside service.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Troy Ambulance Fund.
