Edith Alexander Once of Genesee, Dies in Spokane

Edith Meryn Smylie Alexander, 91, a former Genesee postmaster, died Tuesday at Spokane's Riverview Terrace retirement center.

Mrs. Alexander was Genesee postmaster in the early 1930s and left the office in 1937.

She was born Aug. 1, 1885, to early Genesee settlers William and Cora Mervyn. Her first marriage to George Smylie ended in divorce and she later married Alvin Alexander. He died in 1970.

The Alexanders left Genesee for Montana and later moved to Spokane, where they made their Last Page for many years.

Mrs. Alexander was active in the Order of Eastern Star and had a 50-year pin from Genesee's Lily Chapter.

A son, George Smylie, now deceased, was one of Idaho's first commercial airline pilots, flying for West Coast Airlines, a predecessor of Hughes Airwest.

Survivors include one daughter, Frances Johnson on Naniantic, Conn., and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Last Page in Spokane. Cremation will follow.
